Case study: LNEG implements ModSecur Micro Datacenter

ModSecur Micro Datacenter

LNEG – National Energy and Geology Laboratory – recently restructured its technological infrastructure through the implementation of ModSecur Micro Datacenter, a 100% Portuguese product developed by Maxiglobal.

LNEG is the State laboratory whose mission is to promote and carry out research, demonstration and transfer of knowledge, technical and technological assistance and laboratory support actions aimed at companies, in the fields of energy and geology. Faced with the need to restructure the technological infrastructure, ModSecur Micro Datacenter was chosen because it is a “modular, scalable and highly secure” product.

The challenge

“This project was quite challenging, as it was necessary to decide between carrying out work on the physical facilities or opting for a prefabricated and modular structure. Additionally, there was the difficulty of planning this change without it significantly affecting the users of LNEG’s information systems”, says José Manuel Assunção, responsible for the IT, Communications and Infrastructure Management Unit. This restructuring aimed to improve the physical and environmental conditions of critical equipment.

The solution

ModSecur Micro Datacenter was the option chosen by LNEG as it met all of the Laboratory’s needs. This is a modular and scalable solution that easily adapts to any space. Thanks to its compact size and minimal space requirements, it is an easy-to-implement solution. The choice fell on a micro data center structure because “the implementation cost was significantly lower compared to a room adaptation solution as it did not involve civil construction work, and the air conditioning sizing was clearly smaller taking into account the volume air conditioning”, José Manuel Assunção tells us.

Security is one of the added values of the solution. With IP65 and IK10 protection, it guarantees high levels of security. It also features redundancy for its main components, an MTTR of less than 5 minutes and total availability of the number of U’s.

Maxiglobal’s modular solution, with the exception of connections to the energy grid, is 100% reusable in a hypothetical change of facilities, “which adds value to the investment”.

Non-stop operation: all swappable data center

The ModSecur Micro Datacenter enables continuous operation, ensuring uninterrupted reliability, even during maintenance and component replacements. With an innovative modular design, its main elements can be exchanged without interrupting services. This means that maintenance and replacement of parts can be carried out without affecting the operability of the data center, ensuring its total availability and adaptability to technological and physical changes in organizations.

Project completed successfully

After implementing ModSecur Micro Datacenter, there were several benefits felt by LNEG. “The resilience of the equipment brought peace of mind that didn’t exist before and the alarm system works very well and keeps us up to date with any anomalous situations that may occur”, says José Manuel Assunção. Monitoring is one of the most significant advantages of the solution. It plays a fundamental role in the efficient and secure operation of the micro data center. By providing detailed information about the performance, availability and integrity of systems, real-time monitoring allows you to proactively identify problems, optimize operational efficiency and prevent unexpected outages. The high quality technical assistance, both in the initial phase, where there was a need for small adjustments, and in the exploration phase, normal with scheduled maintenance carried out in a timely manner, was also highlighted by LNEG as a key point of this implementation. “The installation of the data center did not imply any stop or interruption in the functioning of the infrastructure, only when moving the equipment to the vault it was necessary to disconnect the machines, with this shutdown, change and restart taking place within a time window of around 12 hours at the end of week with minimal impact on users of LNEG’s IT systems, which was a great advantage”, concludes José Manual Assunção.
