The Municipality of Castelo Branco chose the brand ModSecur engineered by Maxiglobal to modernize its technological infrastructure. After the implementation of two data centers, the Municipality has a fully redundant and resilient structure.
The challenge
Before the implementation of the two ModSecur data centres, the Municipality of Castelo Branco had three rooms “where scattered equipment was located”, tells us the municipality’s IT team. The existing air conditioning equipment was of the “domestic” style and security levels were reduced, both in terms of access control and in terms of detection and extinguishing of fires. There was a need to modernize the technological infrastructure, increasing physical security, monitoring equipment and creating redundancy. “We wanted a structure that was totally redundant to possible failures, so that one of the data centers could take over all the services of the other technical area”, adds the municipality’s IT team.
The solution
The chosen solution was the ModSecur IT Room, having implemented a data center in the City Hall building and another in CATAA – Centro de Apoio Tecnológico Agro-Alimentar. Maxiglobal was the company chosen to design and implement the solution. “We wanted this project to be implemented by an entity with high knowledge and with robust and resilient equipment, as it is a critical area where the entire infrastructure of the Municipality of Castelo Branco is based”, says the municipality’s IT team.
The implemented data center solutions were designed to comply with Tier 2, with some components with N+1 redundancy, as is the case of backup power systems (UPS) and cooling units. ModSecur IT Room guarantees protection against fire EI 120 minutes, water, dust, humidity and vandalism. Since this is a redundant solution, any piece of equipment is, by itself, sufficient to ensure the operation of the data center.
ModSecur MMS and 3 AXIS containerization system
The two infrastructures are equipped with the ModSecur MMS platform, an integrated monitoring and management platform, which allows an effective and efficient management of all critical components for the operation of the infrastructure. For the Municipality, being able to monitor the equipment in real time is an asset. “We always know the status of both data centers, including details that would otherwise go unnoticed, such as the status of the generator sets, the temperature and humidity level, among others”, says the municipality’s IT team.
Highly energy efficient solutions: PUE 1.3
The high energy efficiency solutions of the UPS and cooling systems, combined with the containerization of cold through ModSecur 3AXis modules, allow optimizing the cold capacity by more than 35%, and reaching PUE levels of 1.3.
Continuity of operations in all scenarios
The IT area currently needs to be operational 24/7. For this reason, in addition to each of the implemented data centers functioning as the main data center, they also function as “disaster recovery” sites in case of disruptive events. In this sense, each installation makes it possible to recover and restore the technological and operational infrastructure in the event of a failure.
“One of our main goals was to have a redundant structure that would be able to restore IT operations in the event of a disaster, whether natural or man-made. We consider it essential to have a disaster recovery plan in order to minimize the impact of any interruptions and to resume operations quickly. Our goal was largely achieved”, says the municipality’s IT team.
A successful project
The implementation project for the two data centers went as planned and the Municipality is very satisfied with the result. “Maxiglobal’s performance was excellent, both in terms of design and in terms of the emergence of relevant changes that had not been planned at an early stage of the project. We highlight the quality demonstrated by the various teams involved who were able to complete this project in record time with immense professionalism”, concludes the municipality’s IT team.
